The Land of Hero Worshippers

How many players’ name, can you remember from Indian cricket team that won 1983 world cup? Most of us would only remember Kapil dev and Sunil Gavaskar. There were other players who contributed significantly and were the backbone of the team but were unknown. In a football team usually the forward, the captain or the goalkeeper are famous. When Ronaldo strikes, the credit entirely goes to to him. But the ball has actually been passed from several players to get converted into a goal.

“Be a team player”, that’s the clichĂ© which is repeated everywhere. But the rude fact is that team players are never remembered or admired; Only protagonists are.

Why Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin shah etc are not considered for the title "Badshahs of Bollywood"? Why only Sharukh Khan(atleast in media) has been given the title?
Because from his earlier days he always used to maintain that “I am the best” and even today he says this sarcastically. Later on other top actor realized this art and declared the same through various movie titles like “Singh is King” or through their blogs or by criticizing indirectly. Only after “Singh is King” Akshay Kumar was considered in the race of being number one. Marketing oneself has become most important aspect with a pinch of boastfulness. In Sharukh’s interview one can notice that he promotes himself as the numero uno indirectly.
What is “Best Actor” award? In simple English it is an award given to the best actor in a movie”. But actually best actor award is equivalent to best hero award. The villain’s acting may be superior to the hero but a villain is not even considered in the best actor category. Remember Amrish Puri as “Mogambo” or Amjad Khan as “Gabbar Singh” etc. Hero’s are worshipped everywhere.

My next statement might generate hate mails against me. But first of all let me clear that I am a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar. But, would he be able to achieve 30000+ runs if he had batted at no 4 or no 5? Most famous players in world cricket are those who opened for their team or were the captain. My point is You have to be the Captain of the ship or the Protagonist of the play to be the one. Only heroes are worshipped.

Take the case of Apollo 11. Only Neil Armstrong is remembered, but what about the other scientists who made the entire mission possible. No one knows them. The fact is the scientists sacrificed themselves to make one Hero called “Neil Armstrong”. Today we have become extremely egocentric and just to hide it we have invented a term called team player.

The Truth is, a Leader, a Ceo or any Top Honcho just pretends to be a Team Leader. Can you get the difference? Who made Taj Mahal? Answer is Emperor Shah Jahan. Is it? It’s actually the 1000 architects whose hands were sliced.

We have to pretend to everyone that yes “I am a team player” though in back of our mind the thinking goes “How am I benefited”???. This is the thinking of self-centered 21st century’s hero.

But a Real Hero is one who sees the entire world in himself. Bhagat Singh, Arjuna, Karna, Subhas Chandra Bose etc were Heros who kept the world above themselves. Today army is facing a scarcity of men. Why are people not joining army? Because we all want to be a selfish hero, a hero who is worshipped and revered everywhere. We won’t know the name of a single army officer from kargil war who got param vir chakra but will know who got the Filmfare award for the best actor. The Principle of Dualism works perfectly here "Though heroes are worshiped, everyone wants a Team Player".

  2. But that is exactly how the wheels of the machine of life turn...all the heroes u mentioned above were never people who were where they were but did not want to be...they survived the odds and love fame...i believe naseeruddin, nana paekar and the breed of "work speaks" people have their own set of limited admirers and if i were one in that club in the future, i would prefer that not any and everyone who had no idea of my worth praise or castigate me,i would be grateful they had their heroes and beliefs,on which i would not comment(in public :))

Point is,everyone is where they wanted to be and the choice is upto us.And being the hero is not what everyone wants to be.Peace.

  4. As long as Heroes perform their duty as desired lets allow them to take the lime light.Heroes are Hero because they are being supported by their ardent followers be it Hanuman in Ramayana or Arjuna following Krishna in Mahabharat. At the top there can be 1 hero and rest all following the Hero or challenging him.But can we undermine the effort put-in by those in background who without caring for all material name and fame are working hard for a greater cause. When the battle is won its the General who takes the credit so as when it is lost, so giving due credits to the Real hero lets appreciate the silhouette who are no less than HEROES...

  6. Bhagat Singh, Arjuna, Karna, Subhas Chandra Bose...did these people become heroes on their own? Do u remember the other two people who died with bhagat sigh, do u remember the lakhs of soldiers who died to keep arjuna or karna alive in the battle...do u know the names of the thousands of people who joined the IMA inspite of the fact that they could have chose to stay at home. No you dont...yet you call them heroes and differentiate heroes and non heroes... A hero becomes a Hero cuz he choses to stand out. He knows when to praise his team, when to drive his team, when to criticize his team, and how to set an example for his team. Its his being a leader that makes him a Hero. A shah rukh khan is a hero cuz he choses to stand out, he choses to take credit for wats he has done...How is it wrong? I believe the most powerful quality in a Hero is his ability to Lead...and all heroes apart from the usual contribution to their fields have shown exceptional leadership qualities....

  7. very nice post Kunal..Gud job!!!

I completely agree the facts which you have put across.

But always the one, who is called as a hero..would have worked or struggled an extra mile which the others would have failed to put!! and always the world has never forgotten its real hero's...Generally we admire a person as a hero, who performs that extra mile overlooking all the odds and also enabling his buddies to grow and do the same!!! Thats the main reason Sachin is always worshiped as a God of cricket...And many of the times real hero's dont show off!!! and the one who will showoff are the one's who doesnt have confidence in themselves to be called as hero's...!!

But other than that the facts which you have mentioned like "Today army is facing a scarcity of men " are really to be taken care...!!

    very good work ya...keep posting!!!! :) :)

  8. @smudged ink:
Your point is correct...but what i want to convey is that todays heroes are extremely self centric. Bhagat singh and others gave their lives for the country. I agree there were others but Bhagat singh lead an example, A real hero. On the contrary today so called heroes(celebrities) are just interested in money, ads and fame. They just have a Big "I" in them. They don't give back to the society. Yes they are leading the current generation to think and act like them i'e I I I.....

  11. I agree with your point that it's the leaders that are remembered. But at the end of the day, they are judged by the results they show, not by what they boast. Leaders like Steve Jobs are known for their arrogance, but there are far more respected leaders like Warren Buffet who are admired for their humility. And because they are humble, they are able to remain at the pinnacle. Look at the greatest sportsmen of all time, you will find them humble.(Tiger Woods may be an exception, talk about Sachin and Roger Federer)

  12. kunal,bro...
being self centric is not always antithetical to serving society...it depends on the definition of I...
now, according to me,the leaders who serve society(and be sustainable in doing so)should be selfish coz a person who internalizes everything around him only has the potential to bring peace to the universe around him...there is nothing external to a selfish warrior of light...
he knows that to be successful in the true sense is make difference on a behemoth scale...and y not do that with focus on everything that he deals with...so I I I is also U,U too and of course U :)

  13. likkha accha hai..
par jaisa aur bhi logon ne kaha.. hero is worshipped but not always.. many times heroes have to take the blame of failure for their entire lives also.. 'chak de' ka shah rukh bhi yaad hoga.. aur koi mil gaya mein hrithik ko bhi struggle karna pada for the major part of his life..
to hero worship hote hain.. par sirf utne time jitne wo perform kare.. latest life insurance ka ad bhi dekha hoga.. sehwag bolta hai na. "balla chalna band.. to fir kya" ..
    sustainable bano.. spike nahi ..

    samjhe na sandal :)

  14. @pinku..Agreed par...hero is synonymous with success. If some1 has failed generally he is not given the tag. Sehwag ka balla nahin chalta toh woh hero ki shreni mein hi nahin hota. I guess this answers the point you have raised!!!

    Thanks for your precious comments!!!

  15. @prox....Thanks for your comments...that may be a school of thought. But I don't agree with that. "You cannot be a leader if you don't think about others"-(Quotes by Damodar Suar Sir). Take the case of CWG. The top honchos had put themselves before the reputation of entire 1.25 billion people. We all know what happened.
Greed and I are eating this world like a Termite:):)

  17. Read a nice article in a long time man! Just to add we turn normal people into so called heroes.. And when these ppl get some attention from the media houses, everything changes. The real heroes who shed sweat in building this nation are often forgotten as you said..I hope their voices will be heard soon enough..
